Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Characters Who Remind Me of Myself or Someone I Know in Real Life

I guess now is as good a time to say as any–starting in July I’ll be contributing to The Broke and The Bookish! Yay! I’ve always enjoyed reading their reviews and participating in Top Ten Tuesdays, and I’m so excited to be working with them! This Tuesday, we’ve made a group effort and each submitted one character that reminds us of ourselves. The rest of mine are below 🙂

1. Elinor – Sense and Sensibility. I really feel for Elinor. She and I are both the oldest sister and feel the need to watch out for our passionate (and sometimes wildly over-dramatic) younger sister. I’m also rather the type to bottle things up and say “I’m fine” (and I don’t mean that in a melodramatic way, just a “why should I burden others with my emotions when they’ve got their own stuff to deal with” way).

2. Marianne – Sense and Sensibility. Marianne is my younger sister almost exactly. Reading the part where Marianne bashes Edward’s emotionless reading of a book of poetry was like reading a 19^th-century version of my sister complaining about my boyfriend being “weird.”

3. Hermione – Harry Potter. She could remind me of me or just about any of my girlfriends growing up—we were all in the advanced classes, pretty much all enjoyed school, and were totally geeky.

4. Briony – Atonement. Again, she reminds me quite a bit of my younger sister, not least because Briony is the younger sister in Atonement, but also because she can get a bit of a hot head sometimes and I can see her jumping to conclusions the way Briony does.

5. Fanny – Mansfield Park. Fanny reminds me a bit of my friend Heather. Heather is one of the absolute sweetest people I know, but can be pretty timid when it comes to people she doesn’t know—and I’m pretty sure she would never speak against someone she didn’t know well even if she knew they were wrong.

6. Nora – Watchers. Mostly in the sense that I can be straight-up terrified of (or at least highly resistant to) change. I know I’m getting really ridiculous about something when Andrew calls me Nora.

7. Melanie – Gone With The Wind. She reminds me a lot of my sainted college roommate, who continued to put up with our OTHER roommate long after she had annoyed the rest of us by acting a lot like…

8. Scarlett – Gone With The Wind. You know how Scarlett complained about just about everything through pretty much the entire book? That’s kind of what that other roommate was like.

9. John Galt – Atlas Shrugged. Rand’s description of John Galt—with the brown hair and the clear green eyes and the open, honest face—reminds me a lot of my boyfriend, Andrew. The rest, not so much…I’m pretty sure Andrew isn’t really the type to go start his own society in the middle of nowhere. Although I suppose he might if things got as bad as they did in Atlas Shrugged.

10. Admiral Croft – Persuasion. Another one that reminds me of Andrew, partially because of the military thing and partially because the Admiral and his wife are really fun and awesome even though they’re kinda old, and I like to think that Andrew (and by extention, I) will be that fun and awesome when we’re old.
